Pennies for Peace

Children’s First Day School Pennies for Peace Campaign UPDATE

After reading Listen to the Wind, The Story of Dr. Greg and Three Cups of Tea, the Children’s First Day School class from Haddonfield Friends Meeting worked to raise money to help with establishing schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  They put on a play of this story at Covered Dish dinner and invited  Meeting members to contribute to their efforts.

Thanks to the generosity of many, many members, $215.53 was collected over three months.  We were touched by the number of people who gave the entire contents of their coin banks!

After the recent questions raised in the media in reference to the monetary accountability of Greg Mortenson’s Central Asia Institute, the children and adults decided to reconsider the recipient of their fund raising.  At May 22nd’s Meeting, a number of worthy groups were considered.  The children decided to send the money to the AFSC after learning of their work in Afghanistan “to promote peace by giving people the emotional tools to deal with their trauma, suffering, and losses, while helping them rebuild communities from the inside……working mostly through schools, teacher training, and the training of interns.”

Thank you to all who helped our young people undertake this project!
